An unique film on birds of prey of Beloveza Forests.
Three years of waiting, snooping and shooting finally resulted in this extraordinary movie on birds' secret lives. Thus it was possible to immortalise unique scenes from birds' lives on film. Crows and buzzards fighting over a carcass, eagle's hunt and an attack on a cormorant colony, pairing dances of black grouses and cranes - all in this film without commentary and exciting music. The unbelievable beauty of nature in north-east Poland is stressed by the effects of atmospheric phenomena - wind, storm and rain - on birds. Breathtaking shots and dramatic action provide the illusion of a feature film, but sometimes give a glimpse of nature even richer than our imagination. Apart from fighting and hunting scenes, there are also very nostalgic and romantic moments of parental love and care.

The film basically tells about birds of prey, but also other birds living in dense forests (here Bialowieza Forest - last and biggest unchanged by man forest in Europe). The author Krystian Matysek has spent 3 years to complete that film. He usually worked alone, sometimes with small group of people. The final effect is brilliant, some critics have found many scenes from that it as the best ever seen in nature films.

I have just watched a beautifully made Polish DVD filmed in Bialowieza Forrest and feel compelled to recommend it to all. The DVD entitled "WITH BEAK & CLAW" ("DZIOBEM i PAZUREM") portrays natural dramas acted out in the last of Europe's big "old growth" forrests. This amazing wilderness is the last home of European Bison but also supports Wolves, Lynx, Wild Boar & Deer. However it is the birds that this film concentrates on. Many of the specialities of the region are filmed including Sea & Golden Eagles, Cranes, various Woodpecker species, Owls & a number of the most interesting passerines. The DVD consists of numerous wildlife action cameos all skillfully melded into a flowing well-crafted film. There is no narrative so don't worry if your Polish is non-existent, though there is music throughout which complements the footage. As well as the film itself & in keeping with most DVDs there are special extras including interviews with the Film-maker, info on most of the birds in the film & additional video footage of some birds. Whilst this is most relevant to Polish speakers; all can appreciate the video foootage-I particularly liked the wee cameo on a nesting pair of Hoopoes. The film is primarily the work of Krystiana Matyska. Many of you who have spent time birding in large forrests will know how difficult it can be to get prolonged views of the birds - never mind filming them. It is apparent that this man has spent a lot of time in the field & it takes skill, devotion & knowledge to consistently be in the right place at the right time! If you want to see good wildlife drama then get this DVD. If you have ever toyed with the idea of a birding trip to Poland (& Europe's last great forrest) then you need this DVD. If you've never seen a Sea Eagle at work-here is your chance & if you've ever wondered what would happen if a Buzzard faced down a Goshawk- well the answer is here.
